SDLP European Election candidate Alban Maginness has said he will back ambitious projects and decisive action supporting green growth as a means of leading the North towards economic recovery.

SDLP European Election candidate Alban Maginness has said he will back ambitious projects and decisive action supporting green growth as a means of leading the North towards economic recovery.

Speaking in support of the Party of European Socialists' day of action on climate change, Mr Maginness said the North's current representatives were not doing enough to tackle climate change or unemployment.

He said: "The dark clouds of recession and climate change hang over the North and the rest of Europe.

"They threaten both our economic present and future.

"Europe and our current Northern Ireland MEPs are not doing enough to tackle climate change or unemployment.

"Yet making the investments to switch to renewable energy and energy efficiency would create new jobs that could help lift us out of the present crisis.

"Europe needs to be bolder and the North needs to be at the forefront of this campaign.

"The SDLP will back ambitious projects and decisive action to invest in green growth as move towards leading the North towards economic recovery."
